DONEGAL TOWN Garda station is set for a massive refurbishment as part of a Government €60M upgrade of garda stations, it was announced today. It’s part of a government bid to repair the damage caused by the closure of 148 garda stations across the country – including five here in Donegal.Deputy Dinny McGinley, has said that the announcement of Major Refurbishment Project for Donegal Town Garda station is great news for the entire community and proof of the Government’s commitment to supporting the Gardaí in their work. “I am delighted that Donegal Town will be receiving a Major Refurbishment Project,” said the government backbencher.“This work will help ensure that our Garda station will be modern and fit for purpose. We need to support the Gardaí in carrying out their work to protect the community. We also need to provide a suitable facility for the members of the public that visit Garda stations, be it someone getting their passport stamped, a victim of crime who is receiving support or someone who is under investigation. In short, this investment benefits the whole community.“This follows yesterday’s announcement by the Minister Fitzgerald that €5.3 million is to be spent on 260 new Garda vehicles between now and the end of the year. These vehicles will be used to tackle the scourge of highly-mobile criminal gangs committing crimes in and across the country.“The Government will now have invested over €34 million in new Garda vehicles since 2012, marking a massive increase on the €4.8 million provided by the previous Government between 2009 and 2011. “Continued investment in An Garda Síochána is vital to provide a modern, effective and fit-for-purpose Garda force. This investment will continue with the recruitment of an additional 600 Gardaí to add to the 550 who have been recruited since this Government reopened Templemore. Investment will also continue through the Capital Plan 2016-2021 which provides an additional €46 million for new Garda vehicles.“In July, Minister Fitzgerald published a new Bail bill to strengthening the law to get tougher on serious and repeat offenders out on bail. This new law will see a clamp down on repeat burglars and will support the Gardaí who work extremely hard to catch criminals.“This Government is committed to ensuring that the Gardaí have all the necessary tools at their disposal to tackle crime. Providing modern, high quality Garda stations will enable the force to do its job in protecting citizens and preventing crime in Donegal and countrywide.” MASSIVE REFURBISHMENT PLAN FOR DONEGAL TOWN GARDA STATION was last modified: October 21st, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Donegal TownGarda stationrefurbishment
The Humboldt State men’s team suffered a tough loss to Cal State San Bernardino (7-9, 5-7) 90-79 at home Saturday night, falling to 6-12 (3-9) on the year. San Bernardino jumped out to a double-digit lead early on in the game forcing Humboldt to play catch-up for much of the night. San Bernardino led by as much as 26 in the first half. Humboldt closed the gap to 18 during the closing minutes of the first half, due in part to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Humboldt’s Will Taylor just …
Highly educated and vastly experienced,Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala could bethe new World Bank president. Its current president Robert Zoellick announced in February that he will step down at the end of June.A tough contestThe other candidates for the top position are Jim Yong Kim from the US and Colombia’s Jose Antonio Ocampo.Okonjo-Iweala said she hoped the selection process she faces will be merit based and that those nominated apply their best minds in the interviewing processes.“I hope that the best candidates come forward. I consider the World Bank [as] a very important institution for the world, particularly developing countries deserving of the best leadership,” she said, adding that she looked forward to the contest.“Am I confident? Absolutely.”She further noted that it would be premature for her to lay out her vision for the World Bank.Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala stepped into the position of Nigeria’s finance minister in July 2011. Before this she was the MD of the World Bank for almost four years, and was the minister of finance and the foreign minister in her home country between 2003 and 2006.Okonjo-Iweala was the first woman to hold either of those positions.Representing the African continentThe constituency meeting between South Africa, Nigeria and Angola forms part of the world body’s three sub-Saharan constituencies out of a total of 25 constituencies.Among some of the issues discussed are the World Bank itself, the kinds of programmes with which it is involved and the extent of the programmes that relate to food and fuel crises, as well as the issue of the bank’s sustainable development and modernisation.“We’ve been reflecting on how some of these programmes relate to our countries and the continent more broadly and how we could encourage the World Bank to find ways of becoming more relevant to promoting development on the African continent,” said Gordhan.South Africa and Angola have committed themselves to mobilise support for the Nigerian minister through the various bodies to which they belong on the continent. The countries will garner support for her candidature at next week’s meeting of the continent’s finance ministers in Addis Ababa, as well as at the BRICS summit where South Africa will encourage members to support her candidacy.
7 March 2014Swiss cross-country world champion Nino Schurter will return to one of his favourite hunting grounds when the UCI MTB World Cup Pietermaritzburg, the opening round of the 2014 UCI MTB World Cup, gets under way on 11 April. The Swiss star will be aiming for a fourth victory at Cascades MTB Park, which he says suits his style of riding best of the all the tracks on the world circuit.‘My favourite course’“Pietermaritzburg is my favourite course on the World Cup circuit and I have won every time I have raced there, which is encouraging for me going into the first event of the new season,” the three-time world champion said in a statement on Tuesday.“The layout of the course is good for me, with a number of technical sections which I can take advantage of, and there are also some short, intense climbs that I really enjoy.”Hot favouriteSchurter, who has been training in the Western Cape in recent months, is hoping to add to his three previous victories at the venue. After finishing the previous season as the best cross-country rider in the world, he will be a hot favourite to continue his run of success at Cascades. The April weather in South Africa will mean that northern hemisphere-based athletes will require some adjustment to the warmer conditions, with many of them coming out of the significantly cooler winter period.‘I really love racing in South Africa’“I really love racing in South Africa,” Schurter said. “I spend time there preparing in the off-season and I am hoping to go out there and repeat what I have done for the past few years.“Getting there early and adjusting to the sun is important and Pietermaritzburg is quite a different place to race at, which makes it exciting,” he added.2013 World ChampionshipsIn 2013, Schurter was powering away to a comfortable World Championship victory in Pietermaritzburg, but a fall at the final “Over the Top” section meant that his lead was cut slightly, making his victory a touch less convincing, but the real race was for second, with Germany’s Manuel Fumic claiming the silver medal ahead of Spaniard Jose Hermida. It was all Schurter in 2012’s Pietermaritzburg leg of the World Cup circuit as well, with the Swiss star overcoming a valiant challenge by the late South African cycling legend Burry Stander, with Fumic, another regular visitor to South Africa, in third place.Importance of the opening eventBeing the first event of the season, the UCI MTB World Cup Pietermaritzburg will be targeted by the riders, hoping to get their seasons off to a strong start, but Schurter is going to be extremely tough to beat.“It is always good to get something under the belt early in the season and that is what I am hoping Pietermaritzburg will give me,” he said.“Winning in Pietermaritzburg will be the perfect start to the season for me, and I am really looking forward to racing at Cascades again.”SAinfo reporter
It’s surprisingly snowing quite hard in Fort Worth, Texas, this afternoon. TCU running back Aaron Green is using the rare snowfall to channel one of his favorite athletes – LeBron James. Standing on the Horned Frogs’ campus, Green did the Cleveland Cavaliers’ star’s famed pre-game powder toss, using a snowball in place of the chalk. Check it out: Well done, Aaron. TCU opens its season Sept. 3 against Minnesota in Minneapolis.
American TweetPenn State made some news yesterday when it was revealed that the team literally buried the game tape of its 27-10 season-opening loss to Temple with a shovel. In the embarrassing defeat, the Nittany Lions surrendered 10 sacks. While Penn State was ready to let that game go, the American Athletic Conference, of which Temple is a member, wants to relish the memory of it . That’s why the AAC’s official football Twitter account dropped a solid troll job on Penn State this morning. Penn State may have buried the game tape, but you can watch all 10 @Temple_FB sacks from Sat on our YouTube page https://t.co/xkp5lidkzS— American Football (@American_FB) September 9, 2015That’s tremendous. This was Temple’s first win over PSU in over 70 years, and they set a conference sack record in the process. The AAC doesn’t have many opportunities to brag about its football accomplishments, so it is understandably proud of the Owls’ performance.
