FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s Drake Murphy and Kevin Steward are the Southland Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.Murphy jetted to a new school record in the 800-meter race in posting the Southland Conference’s top time this year and helped the ‘Jacks win the 4 x 400-meter relay.Steward won the shot put competition. Both athletes’ performances came this weekend at the Leon Johnson Invitational in Natchitoches, La., where SFA registered 11 event wins in the single-day affair.Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week: Drake Murphy, Stephen F. Austin – Sr. – Galveston, TexasMurphy set himself apart from the field while claiming the 800 meter race in 1:48.65. His mark is the fastest in the Southland this year and the sixth-best time of the season in the NCAA.The senior’s time broke the SFA school record, giving him both the all-time program 800-meter marks indoors (:1:52.21) and outdoors.Murphy, from Galveston, also ran a leg for the meet-winning 4 x 100-meter relay team that won with a time of 3:11.62 – the fourth-fastest in the league this year.Honorable Mention: Clint Cole, UIW; Micah Larkins, NSUMen’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Kevin Steward, Stephen F.
